Making Decisions about Support in Collaborative Divorce Cases

Couples experiencing divorce have many questions – often regarding money and specifically the amount of child support and/or spousal support to be paid.

In the collaborative process, the Professional Team will assist the couple in a variety of ways, including itemizing expenses for two households and understand and exploring all available income sources. Although a couple may have heard there is a formula and computer-generated calculation to determine child support and spousal support, a computer calculation is not the only option and may not be the right option for each family.

The couple who chooses the collaborative divorce process will have the benefit of using their Professional Team to guide them through this difficult and confusing conversation between separating spouses, made even more stressful when there are children.

Being able to have an open discussion about the family’s needs, concerns and goals and how to allocate their financial resources accordingly for the future will help reduce the couple’s anxiety and lead them to choosing outcomes that work for their family – they are not beholden to a decision determined by a judge in a courtroom.

The collaborative process focuses on each family and its unique situation to help them craft solutions that work for them while avoiding court which saves the family time and money.
